Joint Base San Antonio
Known as JBSA, this base is the nation’s largest joint base and encompasses many of the bases in the area. Units here focus on a variety of skills that include training, flying, medical, cyber security and intelligence. With a long waitlist for on-site housing, newcomers often choose to live off-base at a nearby community like Homestead. JBSA has many locations spread throughout the San Antonio area, so your travel to and from this base can vary.
Randolph Air Force Base
Randolph Air Force Base is one of the most well-known Air Force installations in Texas, and is fondly known as the “Showplace of the Air Force.” It’s the Air Force’s premier base for pilot instructor training and combat systems officer training. It’s also one of the busiest airports around – it sees nearly 15 times more traffic than the nearby San Antonio International Airport! This base is located 16 miles from Homestead, or about 25 minutes.
Fort Sam Houston
Fort Sam Houston is one of the oldest installations that make up Joint Base San Antonio. Located right in the middle of San Antonio, it’s prime location makes it ideal for overseeing support for the entire joint base. It’s location also makes it easy for families to commute into work, or enjoy everything the city has to offer. Fort Sam Houston is located 22 miles from Homestead, or about 30 minutes.
Joint Base Camp Bullis
A smaller location, Joint Base Camp Bullis still has plenty going on within its borders. It’s used mainly as a maneuvering ground for the U.S. Army, Air Force and Marines combat units. But it can also be used as a field training site for various medical units stationed in nearby Fort Sam Houston. This base is located about 34 miles from Homestead, or roughly 50 minutes.
