Hill Country Day Trips Near San Antonio

January 16th, 2019

The Texas Hill Country covers thousands and thousands of square miles, roughly from the northern edge of San Antonio to where the plains begin northwest of Austin. Many of the towns were settled by German immigrants during the mid 1800s, when Texas was newly independent from Mexico, giving the Hill Country an interesting blend of traditions, cuisine and architecture.

New Braunfels – Old-World Charm

On the banks of the Guadalupe River, the city of New Braunfels overflows with old-world heritage and small town charm. You’ll find well-known attractions like the Natural Bridge Caverns and Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, as well as Schlitterbahn, the country’s number one water park. Everyone looks forward to Wurstfest, the annual sausage festival celebrated for 10 days near the first of November. Nearby Gruene is a small community known for the dance hall and artisans’ shops. (35 miles)

Bandera – Cowboy for a Day

It’s only fitting that the “Cowboy Capital of the World” is a prime spot for horseback riding and trail hikes in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. Guest ranches treat you to evening rodeo shows. On Saturdays from April through November, “Cowboys on Main,” a western display with strolling entertainers, takes place in Courthouse Square. Don’t miss the National Day of the American Cowboy, celebrated in Bandera the last weekend in July. (50 miles)

Comfort – Antique Treasure Hunt

Pace yourself; the city of Comfort packs a treasure trove of antique goodies, from outdoor decorations to paintings and jewelry. Make the best of your time by plotting a stop ‘n shop schedule of Comfort’s best boutiques. In between purchases, stop by a gallery and then break for lunch or dinner at a contemporary bistro. Or, fill up on mouth-watering catfish and or Creole cuisine at an al fresco diner on the banks of the Guadalupe River. (50 miles)

San Marcos – Water Adventures

Go tubing, kayaking or canoeing in the San Marcos River or wade at one of five parks along the river. Visit Aquarena Center, located in the Texas Rivers Center, and take a glass-bottomed boat tour. Enjoy a nature walk at the Aquarena Wetlands Boardwalk, a 24-hour viewing of plants and wildlife in a picturesque atmosphere. Afterward, head underground to the cavernous landmark, Wonder World Cave and Park. Inside this earthquake-formed cave, you can spot a supernatural wonder from an observation tower over 100 feet high. (50 miles)

Kerrville – Outdoor Adventures

Sparkling, spring-fed creeks meander through the rugged terrain and rolling hills of the Guadalupe River Valley, providing the setting for many outdoor pursuits. Start your visit at the Kerrville Wildlife Management Area, nearly 6,500 acres of wildlife habitat, where you can bicycle, fish, hunt and watch birds and animals. (65 miles)

Johnson City – History Comes to Life

Tour LBJ’s boyhood home or visit the Johnson Settlement, the original residence of Sam Johnson—first in the family to leave a mark on the Lone Star State. In nearby Stonewall, the LBJ Ranch District includes a state park and the longtime home of LBJ. For outdoor recreation, visit the Exotic Zoo Resort or Pedernales Falls State Park. (65 miles)

Fredericksburg – Wine & Dine in the Vineyards

The city surrounded by lavender is the perfect place for indulging your taste buds—several notable wineries offer tastings within the Fredericksburg city limits, and many more are within a few miles. Fredericksburg’s restaurants are highly regarded, as are the antique stores and boutiques. (70 miles)
